The Dream House

The Dream House

On October 9th, 2010 we had a fascinating and emotional investigation.

The client contacted me sounding almost in tears. She believed she was having paranormal activity in her home and it was disrupting her life. It was so extreme in her opinion that something had to be done, even inquiring about a house "cleansing" (something I do not do).

The back-story on the home is complicated to say the least. I hope I do not mess up on the details in an effort at brevity.

The house was built around 2000: a young lady's dream home. Tragically, she died of cancer only a year after it was completed and never got to enjoy the beautiful house or its lovely hilltop location in the country. It then sat vacant for three years.

After the current owner purchased the house she sometimes would sense the presence of the previous owner. She considered it a gentle, calming presence with what I would describe as a caretaker attitude. Nothing bad was reported and once that spirit was even believed to have pulled the cover up over the current occupant's feet while she was taking a nap.

Jump forward to about 2008. The occupant's close male friend (actually her ex-husband to complicate the story) had been convalesced in the home and passed away. While it was an emotional time, nothing out of the ordinary (paranormally speaking) happened.

Then in August of this year the activity became frequent and seemed to have an invasive, urgent if not threatening, element to it. Trinkets were moving. Messages seemed to be scratched into the dust on portraits as if my unseen fingertips. While this was eerie enough, the part that scared her most was the frequent "touches".

She felt touches in the bed. She felt touches while doing laundry. She felt touches while relaxing in the living room. She had come to feel she was practically being stalked both in the home, and as of late when she left the home. Sometimes they would be soft, but other times the touches would feel like sharp pinpricks. Once she even reported feeling something crawl across her legs in her bed and it felt heavy and hurt..

Of course many of her friends told her it was just her imagination. There are no such things as ghosts and she was just letting her grief get the best of her. She now had to worry she was losing her mind in addition to her fear of what was going on.

To add to that  fear a local minister told her she had demons in her house. This did not come with any offer to help of course - just a few Bible passages taken out of context to prove to her that something evil was afoot and it was probably her fault.

As if that wasn't enough, a contact with an area "psychic" proved equally as frightening. She was told that she was possessed - again with no offer of real help although I suspect the psychic could have probably found a solution for a price.

While I had my own ideas about what was going on, I was a little worried about what I would find - although finding a demon was NOT one of those worries. If this was a demon, he wasn't a very convincing one.

What I really felt was going on was either the misunderstood  attempts at contact from her former love interest or possibly even "poltergeist"  activity brought on by her own mind because of all the sadness, fear and turmoil embedded into her life over the past few years.

But what if I found something there that did not belong? What if a disagreeable entity had in fact moved into her home? What if I discovered multiple, unaccounted for spirits roaming the halls? What if I found nothing and could not offer her validation for her perceived and sometimes intense experiences?

On our preliminary visit to meet with the homeowner, both my wife and I did sense something in the home. It was nothing that a skeptic would not explain away as excitement and anxiety brought on by hearing the stories. We both felt what seemed to be static charges at various times during our walk-through and some areas of the home seemed to have a heaviness in the air that was not natural. Neither of us described these feeling as scary though.

The investigation was fairly uneventful. A rug got moved that could have easily have been kicked up by one of us. A door was found unlocked and ajar that the homeowner was sure she closed securely. A few static charges and mild cold spots were encountered. But nothing out of the ordinary was recorded on our EMF meters or actually seen or heard by any of the team.

In an effort to get answers for the homeowner, we did do what has become our customary communication session where we stray from science and technology into our "less proven" methods. The answers we got were always benign, occasionally surprising, but very clear. The presence we were encountering felt nothing but love and affection for the homeowner and wanted nothing more than to be close to her and have her be made aware that she was not alone.

Our "discussion" led us to trust  that any discomfort caused was unintentional and the frequency and intensity was an effect of frustration and nothing more. As someone who has elbowed his wife in the nose in the middle of the night, I had no problem believing the sincerity of the message. An agreement was reached that the touching would have to stop, but that he was welcome to stay to comfort and protect her as long as he felt the need...and that he could move all of the stuff he wanted - no need to take the fun out of life/death.

Can I prove any of that? Of course not. I went out of my way to explain to the homeowner that the communication she had witnessed could easily have been faked by us - intentionally or not.

But they were apparently the answers that she needed to hear, and that is good enough for me.

We left her with instructions that if any of the uncomfortable activity continues to give us a call, and also instructed her on the usual "take your home back" methods. But I suspect things will be okay. He said we could come back. She said his birthday is in May.

I would like to thank Tamara Rolins of the Georgetown Paranormal Society for her help and participation in this investigation. Her open mind, level head, and attention to detail helped make this both an interesting and successful investigation.
