Definitions of Terms Used On This Site

EMF Electro-Magnetic Field. Basically anything that uses energy of one type or another produces an EM field. We try to measure and document any of the these fields possibly given off by paranormal phenomena.
From Wikopedia: An electromagnetic field (also EMF or EM field) is a physical field produced by electrically charged objects. It affects the behavior of charged objects in the vicinity of the field. The electromagnetic field extends indefinitely throughout space and describes the electromagnetic interaction.
EVP Electronic Voice Phenomenon. Recordings of sounds and voices on audio equipment that was not audible to people present at the time of the recording.
From Wikopedia: Electronically generated noises that resemble speech, but are not the result of intentional voice recordings or renderings. Common sources of EVP include static, stray radio transmissions, and background noise. Some have claimed these sounds are of paranormal origin, while there are natural explanations such as apophenia (finding significance in insignificant phenomena), auditory pareidolia (interpreting random sounds as voices in their own language), equipment artifacts, or simple hoaxes. Recordings of EVP are often created from background sound by increasing the gain (i.e. sensitivity) of the recording equipment
Ghost Although I tend to use the term loosely,  the correct usage of the word refers  to the soul or essence of a dead person who, for whatever reason has decided to stick around.
From Dictionary.com: The soul of a dead person, a disembodied spirit imagined, usually as a vague, shadowy or evanescent form, as wandering among or haunting living persons.
Infrared
IR
Infrared light is the spectrum of light that is just below the visual spectrum that the human eye can detect. We use IR cameras and lights to view that part of the spectrum.
From Wikopedia: Red is the color of the longest wavelengths of visible light. Infrared light has a longer wavelength (and so a lower frequency) than that of red light visible to humans, hence the literal meaning of below red.
Matrixing The tendency for people to find the familiar in the unfamiliar. Matrixing is a very generic term, but it's the same concept as when you see a pony in the shape of a cloud. I really should use the proper  term, pareidolia, but I have to look up the spelling every time.
Pareidolia From Dictionary.com: The imagined perception of a pattern or meaning where it does not actually exist, as in considering the moon to have human features
Spirit Another term that I use loosely. The accepted usage of the word in this field usually refers to the soul or essence of a dead person that has "crossed over" but comes back from time to time to visit us.
From Dictionary.com: The soul regarded as separating from the body at death
